Word processing software such as Microsoft’s MS Word have been a bane of contention for many writers. Whilst it’s good for basic documents such as CV’s and letters. There’s no arguing that there is very limited functionality in regards to structuring a story.
Scrivener is everything that MS Word and other word processors aren’t. There’s no predefined templates. The beauty lies in the customization, structuring and organization of data and the story/article.
For transparency, I have only touched the surface of Scrivener and based on the use I’ve had from it there is absolutely no turning back or changing to any other software. I was previously using ‘Nimble Writer‘ which is available for just £6.99 via Steam Store. It’s a good cheap alternative but incredibly basic and fiddly compared to Scrivener. For instance whenever I wanted to compile the story I would need to spend time adjusting the font and choosing the front cover image again as it simply never remembered the choices I made previously.
Scrivener provides extensive customization for compiling a story/article into a publishable format such a novel book or manuscript for printing or compatible for tablet devices. Many file formats are supported from PDF, ePUb, Mobi and more. There are plenty of predefined options to make publishing quick and effortless whilst you can make a custom structure to display your work the way you envisage.
Whilst I haven’t delved into having multiple boxes open on the screen. I have moved chapters of my story with ease by simply creating folders and dragging and dropping text shortcuts within them. Compare this to Word and the ease is ridiculous. A simple drag and drop, and the same again to move to a different position within the story. MS Word would require a lot of scrolling, copying and pasting text and hoping it hasn’t disrupted other pages.
Scrivener is available for Windows, Mac and iOS operating systems though they each require separate license purchases or a bundle deal which is still pricey. Scrivener isn’t the cheapest option for writers but it’s worth it’s weight in gold when considering how much use it will get and it’s overall quality. You pay for what you get and with Scrivener you get the best!
A 30 day free trial is available for new users of Scrivener. The beauty of this trial is that no only do you get access to all of it’s features the 30 days are not concurrent. It’s not start 1st July and access ends at the end of the month. If you were to use it twice a month then you would have access to the software free for more than a year!
