Lego Dimensions provides incredible value and a unique experience within the Lego video game franchise by combining different characters into new worlds such as The Simpsons and Ghostbusters. Lego games have for the most part been very good at balancing humour, challenges and functionality that is accessible to children. Rather than focus solely on one theme as has been the main stay within the Lego games the universe has been expanded and available at will (with the addition of sepereate purchases).

Included within the Lego Dimensions Starter Pack are three characters; Batman, Gandalf and Wyldchild along with the Batmobile. Other characters and playsets are available via seperate purchases such as ET, Harley Quinn and The Joker, The Goonies, The Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Dr Who, The Simpsons and many more. Just for the LEGO pieces alone the sets are value for money as the characters and vehicles can easily be removed from the playset. In-fact none of the characters or scenary are pre-built. Players need to follow the guides provided via booklets and on screen within the game to build the characters and sets which is great for kids and fans of actual LEGO projects.

There is a large focus on the LEGO pieces being more than just objects but actual operational pieces. Unlike similar games such as Disney Infinity, Lego Dimensions requires players to move the characters and vehicles onto precise locations of the play board to interact and defeat challenges and bosses. For instance there are numerous challenges which require characters to be painted yellow, blue or red then place those actual LEGO pieces onto the corresponding location on the board. During boss battles portals open with specific colours which again are assigned to the board. Place a character onto the board and they’ll be warped into the location. This feature does add to the gameplay though at times it does feel uncomfortable especially when timing is important. Players with the board placed away from close proximity will have serious problems completing the levels, so bare that in mind. Seriously!

Unfortunately at the time of writing LEGO Dimensions has been discontinued. This means that no future updates, content or characters will be coming to the game anymore. Current playsets may be found discounted on sale but bare in mind when those stocks are exhausted the second hand market will be the only future source of purchase. Lego Dimensions is still worth the investment and new players should definitely take the opportunity to grab some bargains. There are plenty of characters and playsets to collect which provides a lot of content and gameplay not to mention unique LEGO pieces. I never thought I would have the opportunity to play as ET in a LEGO game not to mention have him walking along the Yellow Brick Road in the Wizard of Oz to fight the Wicked Witch. Lego games are always charming and provide ample content and this is no exception. It’s a very in depth game with many features and content possibilities including the ability to spend studs collected and use them to upgrade vehicles or hire temporarily a character not already owned.

The Starter Pack includes a vast story mode which takes players through the many various stages to explore different universes such as The Simpsons, The Wizard of Oz and Ninjago ect. It’s also possible to play expanded levels for additional purchased playsets. Each story stage takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete which is plenty of entertainment considering there are plenty of stages to participate along with a battle mode.

As always with LEGO video games each character has their own unique powers though they do tend to be in one of a few categories where some do the same thing. For instance Gandalf and ET use magic to move objects though Gandalf also has the ability to shoot from his staff. Batman is able to pull objects and shoot his baterang, Wyldchild reveals hidden objects and is fast and building and so on.
