In this card choice-based game your the monarch within the medieval era. Your tasked with responding to each card by swiping left or right to make choices such as answering to requests to upgrading the church with yes or no answers (there are other worded choices depending on the card). The answers provided have immediate consequences on your role as ruler of the kingdom.
Four key ratings are used within the game. These are; Religion, Civilian Population, Army Resources and Wealth. If any of these key ratings reach zero then your reign as ruler is over. In most instances choices which may appear inconsequential at first glance such as being presented with the news of a fantastic harvest and deciding whether to feed the army or the people will have huge ramifications in the long run. One way or the other key ratings are going to be affected in a positive influence for one side and hugely negative for the other. It’s this balance of maintaining stable and even ratings which will govern how long you will rule.
New playthroughs as a different monarch continue where the payer left off last time in terms of the date. Some play-throughs are very short lived and on these occasions you may have had no real influence if for instance you’ve become monarch in the middle of a famine. Your doomed to fail early. Then there are reigns which last many years. It all depends on the cards dealt. Historic situations which are unavoidable are included throughout the game such as the plague wiping our large portions of the population. Causing years and years of a pandemic.
Some rather exagerated and often outreigous situations do occur within the game such as meeting and making a pact with the devil. Deciding whether to kill witches and other unworldly choices will present themeselves. Finding crypts beneath the castle are often throught with danger but you could survive a hero. Three tasks are presented at the start of each session for the player to aim to achieve. Some can be easily completed depending on the circumstances and of course the cards provided. Others can take a few years to finally complete.
The game is enjoyable within short-bursts. Due to the limited gameplay and its repetitive nature “Reigns” won’t hold most gamers attention for more than half hour sessions at most. Thankfully Reigns isn’t an expensive title. At it’s current price-point it’s well worth a purchase.
