Dream Alone is a platformer developed by indie studio WarSaw Games with a heavy emphasis on challenging and difficult level designs. This is a game of perseverance much like Dead in the sense that you will die often and you will get frustrated but when you persevere and succeed there is a real feeling of adulation. The controls are fluid and the gameplay is very original.
The brilliant art-style, gorgeous cut-scenes and engaging narrative had me hooked immediately. In-game the low contrasting colors compliment the theme perfectly. Play through the first few minutes and new game mechanics are revealed which really bring Dream Alone to life.
Switching between reality and alternate reality is genius. Your not prompted when to do this and does require the consumption of a very resource limited formula to do so. Players need to be quick and precise as it’s ever so easy to exhaust the formula and find yourself stuck unable to continue on ahead. As stated previously you will die a lot. Some of this will be by mistakes, often enemies or traps you just didn’t see coming, impatience or simply making the wrong choices which needs another chance. Sacrifice yourself to have another try.
Dream Alone First Look Gameplay Video
Dream Alone is all about the experience. It’s charm is in the challenge and the creative level designs. Playing through the Dark Forest was hell on earth at times but it was a joy to play throughout.
The only downside for me personally is the constant flashing of the screen. Delve more closely it becomes evident that the view is that of someone watching on and its the eye blinking. This fits in wonderfully with the originality that is Dream Alone however for me personally it’s a step too far as it became more of an irritant than enhance the experience.
First impressions of Dream Alone is incredibly positive. The level design is wonderful. Challenge absolutely. Art style quality. I felt engaged in the character from the start and didn’t want to let him down so persevere through to the end of the Dark Forest level which is a harder achievement than one might expect. A full review will be available at a later date. For now be fresh in the knowledge that Dark Alone is a game of perseverance and often sacrifice. Learn from mistakes and take on the games difficult challenge.
